Why Flexi Hoses Fail — And What You Can Do About It
Flexi hoses are one of the most common causes of serious water damage in Australian homes — and most homeowners have never even heard of them. If you've ever looked under your kitchen sink or behind your toilet and seen a corrugated silver hose connecting the tap or cistern to the water supply, that's a flexi hose.
They're cheap, easy to install and convenient. They're also one of the biggest risks to your home.
What Is a Flexi Hose?
A flexi hose (short for flexible braided hose) is a short hose used to connect fixtures like taps, toilets and dishwashers to the water supply. They're usually stainless steel braided on the outside with a rubber or plastic lining on the inside.
Why Do They Fail?
Flexi hoses have a limited lifespan — typically around 10 years, sometimes less. The inner lining degrades over time, especially in areas with higher water pressure. When the lining fails, the outer braid is the only thing holding the hose together. If that goes, the hose can burst suddenly and without warning.
A burst flexi hose releases water at full mains pressure — that's roughly 80–100 litres of water per hour pouring into your home. If it happens while you're out or asleep, the damage to floors, walls, ceilings and personal belongings can be catastrophic.
The Warning Signs
Visible corrosion, rust or discolouration on the braid
Swelling or bubbling of the hose
Any sign of moisture or drips near the connection points
The hose is more than 10 years old (check the installation date stamped on the hose)
What Should You Do?
Have your flexi hoses inspected regularly — ideally as part of any routine plumbing maintenance visit. If they're more than 10 years old, replace them proactively. It's a small, inexpensive job that could save you tens of thousands of dollars in water damage.
At WickyLeaks Plumbing, we check flexi hoses as part of every job we do. If we spot one that's at risk, we'll let you know and give you the option to replace it on the spot.
